The Story

of

Prism Family Medicine

As a first-generation college student and mother of three children, Dr. Rolynn felt the pressure and desperation of poverty while pursing her degrees. She also recognized the value of a strong community to lean on in times of struggle. She was overjoyed at the prospect of learning gender-affirming care from her friend and colleague, Dr. Neil Ragan, when she matched with the ISU Family medicine Residency. In her training, she developed comprehensive primary care skills and found a need for trauma-informed care and standardized LGBT+ curriculum in the program. Determined to build on these skills both in herself and her medical community, she joined the faculty at ISU and staff with Health West. She spent two years teaching with ISU in various departments, building her curriculum and completing a faculty development fellowship with the University of Washington.

Unfortunately, in the Spring of 2024, Idaho Legislature passed HB668, banning government funding for gender-affirming care. In response to this, Pocatello’s only Gender Affirming Care Clinic was closed, leading to the displacement of Dr. Rolynn’s gender expansive patient panel.

However, just as in every storm, light can be refracted to form a rainbow, Dr. Rolynn’s energy has now been redirected into Prism Family Medicine.

She is excited to bring a clinic to the community that is welcoming for all its members regardless of sexuality, gender identity, or belief system.

Meet

Dr. Rolynn, MD

Dr. Rolynn was born and raised in Northern Idaho. She graduated from Lewis-Clark State College Summa Cum Laude, graduated with her MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine as a Targeted Rural and Underserved Track (TRUST) scholar and completed her residency at the ISU Family Medicine Residency. As a member of the queer community, she understands the unique challenges that marginalized individuals face when trying to access safe, affordable healthcare. She takes a trauma-informed approach to history gathering and treatment.

For her, medicine is about more than what happens in the clinic. It is also about advocating for patients and teaching the broader community. Dr. Rolynn has participated in leadership roles with the Idaho Academy of Family physicians, serving on committees in Reproductive Health and Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging. She is currently a member of the American Medical Academy Task Force to preserve physician patient relationships where Evidence-Based Medicine has been legislated against. Dr. Rolynn often has students and residents training alongside her.

A fierce advocate for preventative medicine, Dr. Rolynn works with patients to stop diseases before they develop and prevent progression in preexisting conditions. She aims to empower people to set their own health goals and achieve them.

Meet

Taylor Powell, RN

A proud Pocatello native, Taylor Powell is a registered nurse who graduated from Idaho State University in 2011 with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. With over a decade of nursing experience, Taylor is passionate about cultivating inclusive community spaces where everyone has the opportunity to grow and thrive. She firmly believes that strong, healthy communities are built through intentional care and investment in the people and places that shape them. Taylor’s career reflects her dedication to fostering connections and empowering others, knowing that building community is essential to creating lasting impact in the Pocatello area.

After spending several years doing bedside nursing, Taylor’s global healthcare journey began during her Peace Corps service in Eswatini, Africa from 2016-2018 where she lived and led community health initiatives like a youth group for children living with HIV, a walking group for neighborhood matriarchs that paired exercise with health education, and a men’s wellness and HIV testing program. These experiences not only taught her about herself but also shaped her belief in “thinking globally and acting locally”—a philosophy she still applies to her life and career today.

After returning to Pocatello, Taylor began working in Southeast Idaho’s only gender affirmation clinic where she met and worked alongside Dr. Jessica Rolynn. The two quickly created a professional relationship and friendship founded on similar visions and values. When the clinic closed in 2024, the two dreamed of a medical practice where they could foster a community resource to provide high quality family medicine and a safe and affirming space for Pocatello’s vibrant LGBTQIA+ community. Taylor is happy to be able to put all of her efforts into Prism Family Medicine.
